Defect:
The upper steering shaft and the steering column with a telescoping function are retained by a steel ball traveling in a machined groove. the steel ball was omitted, allowing the extension of the steering column to continue until the steering shaft disengages from the steering column.
Consequence:
If the steel telescope stop ball was omitted anddisengagement of the steering shaft to the steering column occurs, complete lossof steering may result, which may cause an accident.
Correction:
An inspection of the steering column will be made to see if the telescope ball was omitted. the entire column will be removed and a new production column will be installed if the ball is missing.
