Component:
Electrical system:wiring:front underhood
Manufactured:
10/31/1997 - 03/13/1998
Affected:
8,000
Defect:
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with 1.8 liter engines. as a result of the length and routing of the injector harness, it can contact the manifold at the egr pipe. if the harness is damaged, a short circuit can occur, blowing the fuse for the fuel injector.
Consequence:
This can result in the engine stalling.
Correction:
Dealers will reroute the injector harness and replace the harness if it has been damaged.
Notes:

Component:
Fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap
Manufactured:
11/17/1997 - 11/04/1998
Affected:
22,000
Defect:
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. the non-return valve installed at the lower end of the fuel filler pipe can stick due to insufficient clearance between the valve case and the valve shutter combined with the material properties of the fuel hose between the filler pipe and the fuel tank.
Consequence:
This can cause a "hard to refuel" condition, and in some instances, a "fuel spit back" during refueling.
Correction:
Dealers will replace the non-return valve with a modified return valve.
Notes:
Owner notification began may 19, 2000.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact mazda at 1-800-222-5500. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).
