Campaign:
78V240000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Electrical system:wiring
Affected:
16,000
Defect:
Loss of lights and engine shutdown may occur as a result of electrical system failure due to improper circuit crimping and potential heater motor circuit overloading. also, the fuel solenoid may be improperly fused and the headlight harness improperly routed.
Correction:
The dealer will make the necessary corrections, free of charge to the owner.
Notes:
Vehicle description: heavy trucks.system: electrical; wiring.consequences of defect: system failures could occur without prior warning andan electrical fire could start and cause serious injury to vehicle occupants.

Campaign:
79V008000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Visibility:windshield wiper/washer
Manufactured:
09/30/1975 - 08/31/1978
Affected:
12,333
Defect:
The windshield wiper may over-travel its designed sweep angle during its initial stroke with the possibility of temporary wiper immobilization.
Correction:
Dealer will install a restriction fitting in the control valve at no cost to owner.
Notes:
Vehicle description: trucks.system: visual; windshield wiper.consequences of defect: in the event of heavy rain conditions, theimmobilization of wipers would cause a visual obstruction which could lead to avehicle accident.

Campaign:
79V010000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Suspension:rear:springs:leaf spring assembly
Manufactured:
03/31/1976 - 02/28/1978
Affected:
34
Defect:
Some of the vehicles may have manganese bronze spring clip plates used as a substitute for malleable iron. the substitute clips, which are used to attach the suspension spring to the rear axle, may crack allowing the assembly to loosen. this can cause rear axle displacement.
Correction:
The dealer will replace the manganese bronze clips with malleable iron clip plates at no cost to owner.
Notes:
Vehicle description: trucks, heavy.system: suspension; spring clips.consequences of defect: rear axle displacement can cause the driver toexperience loss of vehicle control with potential for a vehicle accident.

Campaign:
79V110000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Steering:wheel and handle bar
Manufactured:
06/30/1977 - 09/30/1978
Affected:
8,921
Defect:
The hose clamp, which was installed around the steering column boot seat to keep noise and dirt from entering the cab, may loosen.
Correction:
Dealer will replace the metal hose clamp without charge.
Notes:
Vehicle description: truck tractors.system: steering assembly; column.consequences of defect: if this occurs, the clamp slides down the shaft andrests between the universal joint and the manual steering gear housing, resulting in increased steering effort. this could have an adverse effect onhandling and an accident could result.

Campaign:
78V132000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Service brakes, air:antilock:control unit/module
Manufactured:
04/30/1977 - 01/31/1978
Affected:
39
Defect:
The involved vehicles may have been built with power unit anti-skid logic modules on tag axle installations instead of the correct trailer type modules. since the tag axle sensor output is less than that of the power unit sensor, it requires the more sensitive trailer module. as sensor output over time drops below minimum requirements, one of two things will happen: (1) the anti-lock system on the tag axle will shut down and the cab mounted fault lamp will light or (2) the system will become inoperative without activating the fault light. this fails to conform to federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 121, "air brakes".
Correction:
Dealer will replace the incorrect anti-lock module without charge to owner.
Notes:
Vehicle description: truck tractors.system: service brakes; vacuum brake system.consequences of defect: if the system becomes inoperative, a brake lock-up,loss of vehicle control and an accident could occur without prior warning.note: the electrical power to the anti-lock system should be disconnected byremoving the anti-lock system fuse until the defect can be corrected.

Campaign:
79V084000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Steering:wheel and handle bar
Manufactured:
11/30/1976 - 02/28/1979
Affected:
5,639
Defect:
The metal stiffener at the rear of the splash shield may become bent during servicing or by abuse. this can allow the splash shield and stiffener or one of its attaching bolts to rub against and cut the steering shaft.
Correction:
The splash shield stiffener will be removed and the steering shaft will be replaced, if damaged.
Notes:
Vehicle description: heavy trucks.system: structure; splash shield stiffener.consequences of defect: prolonged contact may sever the steering shaft, resulting in total loss of steering control and, possibly, an accident.

Campaign:
79V148000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Engine and engine cooling:cooling system:fan
Manufactured:
05/31/1976 - 05/31/1978
Affected:
575
Defect:
Lockwashers, used to retain the engine"s fan mounting bolts, may have been omitted during assembly, causing the bolts to loosen and allowing the fan to separate from its mounting hub.
Correction:
Dealer will install lockwashers on the bolts.
Notes:
Vehicle description: trucks equipped with caterpillar 3208 engines.system: engine cooling; fan.consequences of defect: separation of the fan from its mounting hub could cause personal injury to occupants of the vehicle and to persons outside the vehicle.

Campaign:
79V180000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Steering:wheel and handle bar
Manufactured:
05/31/1978 - 11/30/1978
Affected:
1,223
Defect:
Some of the involved vehicles were not inspected for adequate clearance between the steering shaft and its firewall opening. inadequate clearance could result in the steering column becoming scored or severed by the firewall sheet metal.
Correction:
Dealer will inspect vehicles and, if necessary, enlarge the firewall opening to provide the minimum 3/8 inch clearance for the steering shaft. any scored or cut shafts will be replaced without charge to owner.
Notes:
Vehicle description: trucks.system: steering; steering shaft.consequences of defect: should this occur, loss of steering control and avehicle accident could result.

Campaign:
79V183000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Suspension:rear:springs:leaf spring assembly
Manufactured:
08/31/1977 - 11/30/1978
Affected:
890
Defect:
Insufficient material thickness in the rear suspension lower spring seats may allow the seat to flex and break the seat-to-axle weld.
Correction:
Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the lower spring seats, without charge to owner.
Notes:
Vehicle description: trucks.system: suspension; spring seats.consequences of defect: dislocation of the axle, within the confines of thesuspension u-bolts and hanger brackets could cause misalignment of the mid andrear axle. this could cause loss of vehicle control and an accident.

Campaign:

Defect:
The involved vehicles were built with certain tractor protection valves which may contain an extra valve. this may prevent the trailer brakes from fully releasing after a low pressure application, causing the trailer brakes to drag.
Correction:
The dealer will inspect for the presence of the extra check valve. if found, the extra check valve will be removed. this will be done at no charge.
Notes:
Vehicle description: truck tractor.system: service brakes; protection valves.consequences of defect: overall braking efficiency and vehicle control may beimpaired. this could lead to a vehicle accident.note: the only precaution drivers may take to reduce the risk of malfunctionprior to corrective action is to operate the vehicle bobtail.
