1973 INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER LOADSTAR SERIES Recalls (6)

Campaign:
78V145000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Engine and engine cooling:exhaust system:emission control
Manufactured:
12/31/1972 - 09/30/1977
Affected:
2,500
Defect:
The vapor separator in the fuel tank evaporative omission system lacks the capacity to prohibit liquid gasoline from passing to the canister under certain fuel expansion conditions. gasoline would be discharged from the bottom of the canister onto the rear of engine, creating a fire hazard.
Correction:
Dealer will install an additional fuel separator to enlarge capacity, and add a discharge hose to the bottom of the fuel canister.
Notes:
Vehicle description: medium trucks.system: fuel; fuel tank.consequences of defect: in the event of a vehicle fire, serious personal injuryand property damage could result.note: the conditions which may promote the problem are: hot weather, use offuel with a high reid vapor pressure, and operating vehicle in frequentstop-start service.

Campaign:
77V020000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Power train:axle assembly:axle shaft
Affected:
650
Defect:
The stub ends of the axle housing may not have been properly manufactured to specifications. these stubs would be of inadequate strength and could fracture. complete fracture would cause the front wheel, hub, and brake assembly to detach from the axle.
Correction:
The dealer will inspect and, if necessary, install the correct axle housing stubs.
Notes:
Vehicle description: heavy trucks.system: suspension; front axles.consequences of defect: this could result in loss of vehicle control and anaccident.

Affected:
7,207
Notes:
Ihc campaign no 76502.medium duty trucks with rockwell international 16.000and 18.000 front axles.possibility that due to a forging flaw the right orleft steering arm could break.faliure of the steering arm could result indetachment of the steering arm from the wheel spindle and lead to loss ofinspecting and replacing steering arm where necessary).

Campaign:
73V185000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings
Manufactured:
06/30/1973 - 06/30/1973
Affected:
44
Notes:
International harvester campaign no 73516.medium duty truck.possibilitythat the rear axle hydraulic brake line is routed across rear axle housing andis not maintained by a clip at midpoint of line.if this condition exists, theline could vibrate and crack, resulting in loss of brakes.(correct byinspecting and clipping line where necessary).

Campaign:
75V117000 on 10/11/1979
Component:
Service brakes, air:antilock:control unit/module
Affected:
8,500
Notes:
International campaign no 77509.trucks loadstar, fleetstar, cargostar, tramstar, paystar, conco, 1971 thru 1975 to date.possibility that variousmalfunctions of the anti-lock computers module system can range fromillumination of the anti-lock failure warning light with no apparent effect onthe vehicle braking system to a momentary loss of brake effectiveness on one ormore axles.(correct by inspecting and replacing computer module).

Campaign:
79V212000 on 12/11/1979
Component:
Engine and engine cooling:exhaust system:emission control
Manufactured:
12/31/1972 - 08/31/1978
Affected:
2,950
Defect:
The fuel separators on the involved vehicles may have thin walls due to a material thickness problem. the separators in these walls may crack and may allow fuel vapors or liquid fuel to leak into the engine under high pressure conditions.
Correction:
The dealer will install improved separators and relocate both the separator and fuel canister without charge.
Notes:
Vehicle description: buses equipped with fuel tank evaporative emissionsystems.system: fuel; fuel tank.consequences of defect: leaking fuel in the presence of a source of ignitioncould lead to a vehicle fire and injury to vehicle passengers.
